60 million megabytes in 10 days

A home user with a 512 kilobit per second broadband connection would be waiting 30 years to complete a download of the same size. RAL is a member of the GridPP project - the UK effort by particle physicists to prepare for the massive data volumes expected from the next generation of particle physics experiments.

Grid computing -- a form of computing cluster -- is much talked of in enterprise IT as a way of flexibly using computing power across an organization, CERN is largely paving new ground in building its grid.

CERN, the European nuclear research lab, has passed a milestone in building its worldwide data grid, sustaining a continuous data flow of an average of 600 megabytes per second (MB/s) for 10 days between eight facilities distributed through Europe and the U.S.
The service challenge is a step towards creating the reliable, high-speed distributed computing network, or grid, needed to handle the estimated 15 terabytes (TB) per year expected to be generated by photon collisions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Last month CERN completed building the 100-site grid, based in 31 countries.

IBM, Oracle and Open Source Grid

SAN FRANCISCO -- Two of the largest investors in enterprise grid projects are using open source software to keep their competitive edge in the burgeoning technology.

Executives from IBM and Oracle were on hand at the Open Source Business Conference (OSBC) here today. Each company touted its unwavering support for open source on the grid as the future of distributed computing.

IBM's interest in both Linux and grid is legendary. The Armonk, N.Y.-based computer giant has invested billions of dollars in manpower and R&D to support both.

Irving Wladawsky-Berger, vice president of strategy and innovation at IBM, said the real value of open source software is that it creates communities that can come together and solve problems. That applies to both open source projects, he said, as the momentum in IT is moving to standards.

"Most of the complexity in the infrastructure is there because of distributed systems," Wladawsky-Berger said during a keynote address at the conference. "What you need is a layer above [that layer] that can manage those systems. The grid is providing that layer and IBM is banking on the future existence of the grid layers."

Wladawsky-Berger said IBM's support of Linux, Apache Web server, Eclipse, and Open Grid Services Architecture are helping reduce the value of proprietary offerings and make the overall infrastructure become more valuable.

To that end, IBM recently announced the expansion of grid computing projects for automotive and transportation industries. Big Blue said its Business Consulting Services are helping Land Rover and ZJ Transportation with product lifecycle management and design.

Oracle's love affair with Linux and the grid began back in 1998 on a few servers. Now, Edward Screven, Oracle's chief corporate architect, says 25 percent of Oracle deployments are on Linux and 31 percent of shipments going out are on Linux for Oracle E-Business suite including its latest iteration of Oracle 10g.

"Open source is fundamentally about development process," Screven said during his keynote address. "The only thing that makes a good choice or a bad choice is how it fits into your overall structure. As Mark Twain once said, 'When in doubt strike it out.'"

In addition to Linux, the database software vendor said it also supports open source projects like Apache, PHP , Mozilla and the Eclipse project, of which it is a founding member along with IBM.

Screven said Oracle's push for grid computing has evolved recently to focus on Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and blade servers .

"When we look at open source, we note how the technology applies to a large market," Screven said. "It has to have strong technical project leadership. It has to support commercial vendor economics. There must be a very low opportunity for differentiation. For us, this applies to both Linux as well as the grid projects.

Earlier in the day, Oracle unveiled the results of its latest Oracle Grid Index research, which measures global adoption of grid computing technologies.

The research, independently conducted by research firm Quocirca, found there is growing progress toward global adoption of grid computing, but most have yet to act on this understanding.

Of the three regions measured, North America (Canada and United States) demonstrated the highest overall score on the Oracle Grid Index. North American companies scored particularly well on knowledge of grid computing (6.17) and understanding of grid computing benefits (4.86). North America also leads the other regions in Commitment (3.02) to the adoption of grid computing technologies.

Gridbus Project To Release GridSim Toolkit 3.2

The Gridbus Project at the University of Melbourne, Australia has released the next version its grid simulation software, the GridSim Toolkit 3.2.

The new version of GridSim includes multiple regional GridInformationService (GIS) entities connected in a network topology, allowing the functionality of a virtual organization (VO), and also adds the ability to select or filter an event from the incoming entity's queue based on set criteria.

All components developed as part of the GridSim Toolkit are released as open source under the GPL license.

This is nothing to do with grid! ;) But my other love Physics

One of my friends directed me to this list, I read it once, read again and again. Yet I feel as if all these people are hiding something behind their quotes, have to read again. Just like with Quantum Physics, it is never enough, and it never will be! So I will keep a copy of it handy in my grid Log!!

The California Public Utilities Commission voted to give up its fight for VoIP regulation

The state Public Utilities Commission voted 3 to 1 behind closed doors late last week to pull out of its appeal of a Federal Communications Commission rule designating so-called voice over Internet protocol as an interstate service beyond state control.

California's was the first of several state utility commissions to appeal the FCC order, leading to the combining of the cases in the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Its decision to withdraw is likely to cause delays and a move to another circuit."

Oracle Customers Achieve 150% ROI Over 5 Years using Grid Computing

Oracle Grid Computing customers are achieving an average of 150 percent return on investment (ROI) over five years, according to an independent study from Mainstay Partners. Windows for Grids follows regular M$ delays

Microsoft will delay delivery of Windows Server 2003, Computer Cluster Edition, a new edition of Windows aimed at grid-computing scenarios.

"Microsoft is now planning to deliver the first beta to customers in the second half of 2005 and the final release is scheduled for first half 2006," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an e-mail to reporters Tuesday night.

Since originally unveiling plans to create the cluster-focused edition in June 2004, Microsoft has offered a delivery target of the second half of 2005. A beta was supposed to be available in the first half of this year.

The delay will allow Microsoft to incorporate feedback from customers and partners looking at pre-beta versions of the edition, the spokesperson said. Among the problems needing more attention are overall management and deployment of CCE-based clusters.

Microsoft also disclosed plans to provide a summer update to the CCE Software Development Kit that was distributed to a limited number of ISVs and OEMs late last year.
